Climate Chaos Hits The World’s Most Vulnerable

Amid violent storms and epic floods across the globe, the deluge in the Sahel in West and central Africa highlights the inequities perpetuated by climate change.
About 1,000 people have been killed, at least 2.9 million have been displaced and agriculture has been devastated in the conflict-wracked region.

‘Destroying Africa’s ecology?’ — China’s initiatives lead Africa’s green development

China and Africa share a longstanding friendship, respecting, appreciating and supporting each other consistently during the past several decades. The results of their cooperation in infrastructure development, agriculture, healthcare and education have been undeniable. However, some Western media and politicians continue to accuse China of debt traps, neo-colonialism and more. CGTN’s new series “China-Africa Cooperation: Debunking Western Myths” aims to put the record straight.

For businesses, climate adaptation is no longer a dirty word — it’s survival

It wasn’t long ago that “adaptation” was tantamount to “surrender” in the climate world, an assumption that bracing for bleak climate realities was an admission of the failure to mitigate them. “Al Gore, in 1992, called adaptation ‘a kind of laziness,’” wrote Molly Wood in Wired magazine. “It’s like saying we’ve lost, and the best we can do now is hunker down and hope to save as many as we can.”

Climate funding sees gap between promises and reality

Bangladesh, considered one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change impacts, is facing a funding shortfall for adaptation efforts.

“Bangladesh spends roughly $1.2 billion annually to address climate change threats, but the actual financing needs are closer to $8.5 billion per year,” said Prof Patrick V Verkooijen, CEO of the Global Center on Adaptation (GCA), during a recent interview with The Business Standard.

Climate Adaptation: Loans to raise debt distress

It is an injustice when countries like Bangladesh that are not responsible for the climate crisis have to take loans for adaptation programmes, said Prof Patrick Verkooijen, CEO of Global Center on Adaptation (GCA).

“The countries like Bangladesh, Kenya and Senegal of the Global South do not cause climate crises. They don’t want loans for climate adaptation as it increases their debt distress. This is a profound climate injustice in the system,” he told a selected group of journalists at a Dhaka hotel on Monday during his three-day visit to Bangladesh.

“Hey, nice sea wall”: Finding trillions for adaptation

4 billion people live in countries where climate change-related disasters are becoming more severe and frequent. Spending money to adapt, known as “climate adaptation finance” is a fraught topic. Who will pay for those adaptations and how, as well as a global goal on adaptation are all being discussed at COP28. To find out more, Akshat speaks with Patrick Verkooijen, head of the Global Center on Adaptation about the history of climate adaptation finance, what negotiations are taking place, and why the money promised still hasn’t arrived.

Patrick Verkooijen, CEO of the Global Center on Adaptation, speaks to BBC World at COP28 in Dubai, UAE about the need for developed nations to follow through on the promise to double adaptation finance to address the climate change impacts already affecting the developing world. Prof. Verkooijen draws the focus specifically to Africa, whose leaders have endorsed the Africa-led, Africa-owned Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program (AAAP) and who have begun developing Adaptation Compacts – country-led investment roadmaps for adaptation.

Cop28: what could the climate conference achieve?

A potential peak in greenhouse gas emissions, methane efforts and climate finance are among the reasons for optimism

If current growth in renewable energy continues, and if countries take action on cutting greenhouse gases such as methane, then next year could be the year in which greenhouse gas emissions at last reach their peak.

GCA chief Verkooijen says world should support Bangladesh’s climate change measures

Bangladesh may have sufficient plans to combat climate change but the international community needs to help the country to implement the measures, says Patrick Verkooiken, chief executive of the Global Center on Adaptation.
Speaking on bdnews24.com’s Inside Out on Sunday, he said: “I think Bangladesh has the ideas. It has the political leadership to drive this agenda.”
